Nowadays everyone has a phone with a built-in flashlight. Compared to flashlights we might have had when growing up, current smartphone lights seem to work pretty well, right? Maybe, but phones are no competition for some of the flashlights around today. Here’s a few reasons why you should highly consider getting yourself and everyone you know a dedicated flashlight.

1. Modern flashlights are much brighter.

When it comes to looking through the darkness, phone flashlights have a very limited reach. That’s because they’re designed to light up objects directly in front of them while taking pictures. The light is pretty dim because all the light gets spread out in every direction instead of being focused where you want it. Many dedicated flashlights have a more focused beam that travels farther, allowing you to find what you are actually looking for.

2. Having a separate light saves your phone battery in case of emergencies.

The last thing you want to happen in an emergency is to have your phone battery die. If there was a blackout and you needed a constant light on to see, do you really want to drain your phone battery? I know I don’t!

3. Using a phone as a light is uncomfortable and impractical.

For lighting up a small open area a phone light might suffice, but what happens when I drop something behind my nightstand? Or lose something under the couch? Since the lights on cellphones are closer to the center of the phone, you can’t position them against walls or the floor to see into smaller cracks. And since you have a big, fragile, expensive screen on the other side of that phone light, you wouldn’t want to put that phone anywhere precarious where it might fall over. This greatly limits how useful a phone light could be.

4. Many flashlights have useful extra features.

From magnetic mounting bases to adjustable heads, modern flashlights could offer more than you might think! You can attach a flashlight to your backpack with a blinking red light as you bike home after school, use a UV light to check for counterfeit bills when you do that Facebook Marketplace exchange in the parking lot, and even charge your phone from some flashlights’ built in power banks! There are flashlights that are fully waterproof, have USB-C rechargeable batteries, and have special tips in front of their lenses that can be used to break glass.

5. Flashlights can be used for self-defense.

It may seem like there’s no way a light could help protect you, but nothing could be further from the truth! A nice bright flashlight beam to the face will stun any would-be assailant for a couple seconds, giving you ample time to turn and run. The extra attention brought by the shining light will also deter anyone meaning to do harm from continuing to come after you. There’s a reason they say crime happens in the shadows!
